The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers an M.A. with a major in Spanish. Students specialize in one of two concentrations: Hispanic literatures and cultures or Hispanic linguistics. Hispanic Literatures and Cultures Concentration: The MA concentration in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures provides students with a comprehensive overview of the fields of Hispanic literatures and Hispanic cultures and prepares the student to pursue work at the Ph.D. level in Spanish or in other disciplines.Hispanic Linguistics Concentration: The MA concentration in Hispanic Linguistics provides training in Spanish Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Sociolinguistics, Heritage Language Research and Pedagogy, Second Language Acquisition, Online Teaching Methods, and Pragmatics. This concentration will prepare the students to pursue work a the Ph.D. level in Spanish or in other disciplines.The MA Program in Spanish provides a broad spectrum of programmatic concentrations, including specializations in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures and Hispanic Linguistics. This approach affords students the opportunity to develop their ability to increase and expand their understanding of the languages, literatures and cultures of the Hispanic Southwest, Latin America, and the Iberian Peninsula. The coursework offers students the opportunity to hone their critical thinking, oral, and written skills in Spanish. The MA Program in Spanish prepares students for careers in a wide variety of disciplines and for advanced scholarly work at the doctoral level.The MA concentration in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures provides students with a comprehensive overview of the fields of Hispanic literatures and Hispanic cultures and prepares the student to pursue work at the PhD level in Spanish or in other disciplines.
