In the Egyptian art and archaeology concentration students immerse themselves in the millennia long cultural history of ancient Egypt spanning the time from its formative state formation in the predynastic period to the era of Roman rule. Through rigorous academic study under the guidance of a distinguished faculty of Egyptologists students learn how to critically assess and contextualize ancient Egyptian art while acquiring proficiency in Middle Egyptian language and texts enabling them to directly access primary sources and to conduct in depth research in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the culture. The extensive and dedicated library of Egyptology books and the over 1500 artifacts held in the collection of the Institute of Egyptian Art Archaeology a Tennessee Center of Excellence housed in the Art Museum of the University of Memphis are accessible to students for individual research and study projects. In conjunction with the Department of History fieldwork experiences are available providing opportunities for on site training at archaeological sites in Egypt. Through these practical engagements students develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and intricacies of research and its dissemination that are specific to the discipline.
