Generally speaking, the goal of engineering is to improve the quality of life of individuals, both here in Canada and around the world, through the principled application of science and mathematics in solving the problems of society. From an electrical and computer engineering perspective, this involves the development of electrical, electronic, and computing systems, and the software that runs them, to meet the diverse needs of individuals and businesses.In our modern lives, we rely heavily on the work of electrical and computer engineers. Virtually all aspects of our daily activities are made possible by electrical, electronic, and computing systems. Approximately eighty percent of all electrical devices contain at least one microprocessor. Just take a look around your home, school or business and consider how different your day would be without the benefits of electrical devices such as smart phones, computers, televisions, automobiles, refrigerators and the Internet. Electrical and computer engineers are the professionals who design, improve, and apply the electrical devices and systems that we use in our day-to-day lives.Electrical engineering is the largest branch of engineering. Computer engineering is a rapidly expanding branch of engineering with its roots in both electrical engineering and computer science. Together, there are in excess of 235,000 electrical and computer engineers working in North America. In Manitoba alone, there are over 110 companies employing electrical and computer engineers. Students with undergraduate course deficiencies may be admitted to the Pre-Master's program to complete the background requirements.Expected Duration - 1 year.
