Le Cordon Bleu is one of the world’s best cookery and hospitality schools, with 40 international schools in 20 countries. Its New Zealand location is in the busy capital city of Wellington. The school, which was set up in Paris in 1895, trains the chefs and hospitality managers of the future in classic French cookery techniques. Some courses last a full academic year, while others are shorter and focused on specific techniques.


Le Cordon Bleu’s international schools train more than 20,000 students every year. Those studying in New Zealand will be taught by a team of French-trained chef tutors, and get to use state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

Wellington is home to people from all over the world. It’s a friendly place to live and study and was given World Health Organisation (WHO) Safe Community status in 2006, and again in 2012. With nearly 200 students from more than 23 countries, Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand is as international as the city itself. Students can walk from the school to some of the city’s best restaurants, cafés and bars.


The school doesn’t have on-site accommodation, but there are plenty of places to stay or live in the area. You can find a home before you arrive, or book temporary accommodation for two weeks and decide where to live when you get to Wellington.


The Career Services team has a strong relationship with the industry, both nationally and internationally. Graduates are working in restaurants and specialist bakeries across the world, in places including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Tonga and Fiji.

Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand’s programmes are designed to make all kinds of chefs and industry managers the best they can be. Its approach is to help everyone reach an excellent standard by practicing, learning and perfecting new and current skills.  


The school’s teaching staff have real-world experience, with everyone from Masters of Wine to published and recognised authors delivering lessons and practical classes. They have a deep understanding of techniques and industry insights that set students up for success.


Class sizes are small, with around 16 students in each class. Students get one on one help from expert chefs so they can perfect difficult techniques. The programmes are designed for people of any age and experience level, making them a good option for anyone who wants to start or reach another level in their culinary career.


95 per cent of students at Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand finish their programme and achieve a qualification. During their time here, they’ll also build personal and work-readiness skills that make them in-demand across the world. Graduating from Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand sets students up for a brilliant career in cookery and hospitality.


Entry requirements

Applicants need to be at least 16 years old to study at Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand. To be accepted onto the Certificates, Grand Diplôme, Diplôme de Cuisine and Diplôme de Pâtisserie programmes, students will only need to be meet certain English requirements. They don’t need to have previous experience in a cookery or hospitality role.


If they’d like to study Diplôme Avance Culinaire (NZQF L5), students have to complete the Diplôme de Pâtisserie or Diplôme de Cuisine, NZQF L4 qualification first, in a similar or related field. Work experience or other qualifications might be accepted too. Some students may need to complete a practical test on-site in New Zealand before they’re accepted onto the higher-level course.


To study for the Bachelor of Culinary Arts and Business degree, applicants need to show they’ve achieved their local equivalent of New Zealand’s University Entrance.  


There’s plenty of information about Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand’s entry requirementsenrolment deadlines and application process to make the process easy. Students can also speak to the admissions team if they have questions about things like visas.


English Score Required

All programmes at Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand are taught in English. If a student’s first language is not English, they’ll need to show the results of an English language proficiency test that was taken within the last two years.


The minimum English requirement for Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand Certificates, Grand Diplôme, Diplôme de Cuisine and Diplôme de Pâtisserie is IELTS 5.0 Basic level. If students are applying for more advanced courses, they’ll need to show they’ve achieved IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

To be accepted onto the Bachelor of Culinary Arts and Business degree, students must have an IELTS 6.0 (Academic) score. No band should be lower than 5.5 and they should score at least 6.0 in writing or equivalent. If students haven’t already taken a test, the school can help them organise this.


Students will need to create an online account with Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand to start their application process. After choosing the right course, they’ll apply online. If they’re successful, the student will be sent an Offer of Place and information on what they need to do next.


Fees vary depending on the chosen course of study and there are differences in the cost for domestic and international students. Every international student needs to get a visitor visa, even if they’re only staying for a short time. If a student is going to be studying for more than three months, they’ll need to apply for a student visa.


Scholarships & funding

International students can work up to 20 hours every week at Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand, allowing them to support their lifestyle and get industry experience.


There are a few different scholarships on offer here. The Bachelor of Culinary Arts & Business Scholarship gives students a 15 per cent discount on their fees. It’s open to all international students. There are also more specific scholarships, like the International Indian Subcontinent Scholarship, which support students from certain countries with their fees.


University structure

Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand teaches the latest techniques in cuisine, pastry and desserts, bakery and hospitality management. Its courses include:


  • Le Grand Diplôme – an all-round training course
  • Diplôme de Cuisine (diploma in cuisine)
  • Diplôme de Patisserie (diploma in pastry)
  • Diplôme Avancé Culinaire (new advanced culinary diploma)
  • There is a course for all budding cuisine and patisserie chefs
  • The Bachelor of Culinary Arts and Business



The campus has new equipment, and facilities which can be found in professional kitchens. There are lecture theatres with practical areas and speakers, where students can learn practical and theoretical information. The campus also has specialised cuisine and patisserie kitchens and a fully-licenced training restaurant (Brasserie Le Cordon Bleu). When students need to study, they can visit the library, which has plenty of food, wine and hospitality management books and quiet study areas with computer access.



Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand is in the centre of Wellington. There is no on-site accommodation, and the school doesn’t arrange places to stay for students over 18. It will provide recommendations, though, so students should speak to the admissions team for more information.


If students are under 18, the school will organise Homestay accommodation. This means staying with a local family, who will help them adjust to the language and culture and being away from their family. Homestay families can live a bit further away, so students should check out public transport before they arrive.


Its great location means there are plenty of places to stay near Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand. Students can find a place to live or stay before they arrive, or choose to stay somewhere short-term and find a long-term home once they get to Wellington.


Wellington is popular with students and travellers, so there are lots of hostels and affordable hotels in the area. Hostels are a good choice for people who want to meet lots of other young professionals and students. A few are within walking distance of the school too, making it easy to get to classes.


There are many studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments nearby, all with kitchen and bathroom facilities. Students can share rental accommodation with other students. This is called 'flatting' and is a cheaper way to live and make new friends. The website TradeMe is a popular place for students to find a place to stay in Wellington.


Student support

Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand is like a family for students and staff. There’s lots of support here, and small class numbers make sure everyone gets the attention and help they need.


Careers Service

The Career Services department helps students and alumni find jobs. While they’re studying, students can make an appointment to talk about:


  • CV writing and self-marketing
  • job searching
  • preparing for interviews
  • portfolios
  • general career decision help


The team also supports alumni and helps former students find jobs with local, national and international employers.



The Diplôme Avancé Culinaire (level 5) Internship programme happens during the final ten weeks of the advanced culinary course. This allows any student to keep working if they’re offered a job at the end of the internship.


Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand’s Career Management department helps students find placements and internships that are right for their goals. These placements could be anywhere in the world. They also provide support with professional development and CV preparation. The Career Services Manager regularly checks in with interns, either by visiting them in person or through phone calls and emails with them and their supervisors.


Graduate outcomes

Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand graduates are popular because of their cookery skills and ready-to-work attitudes. The school’s reputation means former students are seen as impressive professionals by all sort of organisations. The Career Services team has a strong relationship with the local, national and international companies. Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand students can be found working around New Zealand in places like Auckland, Taupo, Napier, Hastings, Wairarapa, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Lots of former students end up working in places like Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Tonga and Fiji.


During their time here, students will be encouraged to volunteer. It helps them build connections and add more experience to their CV.


Throughout the year the Career Services team offer several volunteering opportunities. There are also opportunities to volunteer at charity functions, in the local hospitality industry and at the French Embassy. Doing volunteer work gives students real-life, fast-paced kitchen and service experience. This helps improve their speed and communication skills, making them even more likely to find a great job after graduating.


The Career Services team also organises lots of activities and events to help students prepare for graduation. Guest speakers from local businesses come to classes to share their professional experience. The team also help students visit local businesses in their area of study. It’s a great chance for them to see what they’re learning in a real-world setting and prepare for the next stage of their lives after university.
