Master of Science in Civil Engineering

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering awards the Master of Science in civil engineering, the Master of Science in environmental engineering, the Master of Engineering in civil engineering, and the Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering. A Master of Science degree in environmental sciences and engineering are also administered within the department. The department has 48 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 21 emeritus faculty members, many of whom actively engaged with the department. Additionally, the department has 26 other faculty members which includes professors of practice, research faculty and administrative faculty. The department also is supported by 18 staff members. Three faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, one is a member of the National Academy of Science, two are members of the National Academy of Construction, and ten hold prestigious named professorships. Fifteen members of the faculty have been awarded Presidential Young Investigator, National Young Investigator, or CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation. Two have been awarded the prestigious PECASE Award and seven have been awarded the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award. Faculty members within the department have received numerous national and regional awards for their teaching, research, scholarship and outreach activities.
