A minimum of 54 hours of graduate credit is required of candidates for the Ph.D. in Medieval and Byzantine Studies. The program incorporates the M.A. curriculum while also requiring an additional 24 credit hours of course work (in the area of specialization and one minor field), comprehensive exams, and a dissertation. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 in order to continue in the program.
The Ph.D. in Medieval and Byzantine Studies offers students broad and interdisciplinary training in various components of medieval civilization, providing both perspective and tools for specialized research. The Center for Medieval and Byzantine Studies at CUA offers a meeting point and active scholarly community for researchers and students of the medieval period. It involves over forty faculty members from various schools and departments and offers an interdisciplinary program in Medieval and Byzantine Studies both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Medieval and Byzantine Studies Program was organized in 1969 and operates under the general direction of an interdisciplinary committee. The purpose of the program is to promote the understanding and study of the medieval world and its cultures, to introduce students to various fields of the discipline and their methodologies, and to provide a solid basis for advanced research into the medieval period in subject areas which require a background that transcends the boundaries of a single discipline.
