The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science offers thesis programs leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, as well as course-based programs leading to Master of Agriculture and Master of Science degrees. Departmental graduate program guidelines exist and are summarized in the Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science Program Handbook. Plant Biosystems research crosses many disciplines in the areas of plant physiology, biochemistry, plant breeding, weed management, plant pathology, and rangeland management. Research programs cover both traditional and new crops to address issues of crop improvement and production efficiency, sustainable agriculture and environmental health, and development of new plant-derived products for health and industrial applications.

For a thesis-based MSc degree, the Departments minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. All applicants are also required to submita Curriculum Vitaenames and contact information of three references.Four-year undergraduate degree (preferably Science or Engineering based), or its academic equivalent, from a recognized institution, and:Grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 out of 4.0 or B+ on a letter-based scale in the last two years (approximately 60 credits) of post-secondary study.
