Through core courses that deal with the culture, history and social control of technology, the program develops broadly educated, resourceful engineers with a multidisciplinary outlook and strengths in communication and effective interaction with others.

Overview

The total time from admission to Engineering to graduation with a B.Eng. Society in Engineering Physics is five years. Graduates of the program provide valuable feedback, which helps to maintain the relevance of the undergraduate curriculum to current engineering applications. One of the strengths of the Engineering Physics program is that it is very broadly based and prepares its graduates to pursue a wide range of career paths. All students in the program obtain a background in electrical science, engineering materials, classical and quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, electronics, data acquisition and handling, mathematical physics and numerical analysis.

The core courses in Engineering and Society provide our students with a deeper understanding of how their future engineering practice will influence and impact their communities. Within the context of historical analysis, public policy development and evolution of green engineering we investigate how technology affects society and how in turn society influences the development of technology.

In addition, three courses called Inquiry in an Engineering Context, develop skill at formulating questions, carrying out research and communicating findings. These courses help to examine the complex nature of issues like sustainable development and systems failure.

Work done in these core courses fosters and develops:

oral and written communication skills through group work and seminars

initiative

strategies to critically define and assess problematic situations

the ability to work effectively as a team with engineers from all fields

Co-op and Experiential Learning

As for all engineering disciplines at McMaster, students in our programmes have the opportunity of applying for an industrial internship. If successful, the student typically is employed on industrial placement from the May following his/her third year in the academic programmes and returns to school for Level IV in September of the following year.

Applicants who have completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma will be considered for admission to Level I, provided the completed diploma program includes the subject requirements of the program desired. Six subjects are required at the diploma level, of which three must be at Higher Level. Diploma points will be included in the overall score. All programs require six subjects, including program requirements, 3 at the Higher Level (HL) and 3 at the Standard Level (SL).  An anticipated minimum score of 35 is required for consideration. Other English Language Requirements: CAE: (Cambridge English: Advanced): Minimum overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176, with no less than 154 in each of the components; PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic): 60 Overall with minimum score of 60 in Writing and Speaking. Valid for 2 years; CAEL(Canadian Academic English Language): 70 Overall Valid for 2 years; MELAB(Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): 85 Overall, Valid for 2 years, Minimum 80 in each of the three required components, Minimum 3 in optional speaking component (Required).

Entry requirements may vary from country to country. Students are required to complete Grade 12 high school diploma equivalent to Canadian qualification.

Admission to Level II Engineering programs requires completion of all non-elective Engineering I courses with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0.

In addition, admission to a B.Eng.Mgt. program requires the completion of ECON 1B03 with a minimum grade of 5.0; an interview may also be required.

Students admitted to a B.Eng.Society program are required to submit a statement indicating the educational objectives for the focus electives.

English Language Proficiency

IELTS - International English Language Testing System (Academic): 6.5 Overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening); results valid for 2 years

CAE - Cambridge English Advanced: 190 Overall with minimum score of 180 in each component; valid for 2 years

PTE - Pearson Test of English Academic: 60 Overall with minimum score of 60 in Writing and Speaking; valid for 2 years

CAEL - Canadian Academic English Language: 70 Overall with no component score below 60; valid for 2 years

MELAB - Michigan English Language Assessment Battery: 85 Overall valid for 2 years; Minimum 80 in each of the three required components; Minimum 3 in optional speaking component (Required).

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language IBT: 86 Overall with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening); valid for 2 years
