The New School

The New School: A University in New York City was founded a century ago in New York City by prominent American intellectuals frustrated by the intellectual timidity displayed by traditional colleges. The driving thought was to create a new kind of academic institution, where faculty and students could honestly address the different problems facing societies in the 20th century. The finest minds of the 20th century have pioneered courses in areas of social sciences and liberal arts at The New School. The school’s groundbreaking courses have attracted students from the world over, including a young Shimon Peres, the former prime minister of Israel. The New School also gained renown for courses in the creative arts and became the first American university to teach the history of film, and one of the first to offer college-level courses in photography and jazz.
