Overview: The SIUE School of Pharmacy participates in the Doctor of Philosophy in Multidisciplinary Biomedical and Biological Sciences (MBBS) with concentrations in Medicinal Chemistry is offered by the School of Medicine at SIUC. Students who have a passion for research and are driven to make an impact through a career in drug discovery or other areas of pharmaceutical sciences in both industry and academia should consider pursuing this program.Collaboration between experts in medicinal chemistry and regional leaders in neuroscience and pharmacology has allowed for the creation of a degree opportunity that will help meet the demands of the fast-moving biotechnology field. Students can pursue a concentration in medicinal chemistry that will prepare them for the complex and multidisciplinary approach needed for discovery of the next generation of therapeutics to fight acute and chronic disease. The medicinal chemistry concentration requires a total 24 hours of graduate credit on campus as a PhD student to meet the residency requirement for the PhD. Students are admitted to PhD candidacy after having completed the residency requirement, completing all required courses, the research tools requirement, and the comprehensive written preliminary examination. After admission to candidacy, students must complete 24 hours of MBBS/PHPS 600 (dissertation research) to complete the dissertation research project and prepare the dissertation document. 12 of the 24 credit hours of dissertation research for residency at SIUC and for the remaining 12 credit hours at SIUE. Only six hours of dissertation research credit may be applied to the 24 hour requirement prior to entering candidacy.
