Your Future In Art History

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from the University of North Texas will prepare you for a variety of careers related to art history. It'll also provide a solid foundation for further work toward a master's or doctorate degree. Most art historians hold graduate degrees. With an advanced degree, you can pursue a career as a(n):

What we offer

The Art History program enhances your understanding of past and contemporary visual art forms. We teach you about global artistic production, relevant technologies, critical methods, learning theories and innovative approaches.

The program offers classes that focus on:

  • Visual and material culture of the late antique and medieval periods in Europe, the Islamic world and South Asia
  • Visual and material culture in the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and the Americas from the 16th to the 21st centuries
  • Historiography, methodology and theory of art and visual and material culture since 1900

Faculty members have a wide range of specialties in art and architecture from different time periods and cultures. These specialties include art of the Americas, European art and architecture, Islamic and Middle Eastern art, Modern and Contemporary art, and South Asian art and architecture.

They also address issues of colonialism, post- colonialism, geography, ritual and spatial analysis, race, gender and sexuality. They've distinguished themselves through quality teaching, research and numerous publications and presentations.

In addition to exhibitions showcased at the UNT Art Gallery, you can access art collections held at major art museums and numerous galleries in Dallas and Fort Worth. These facilities are valuable resources and can provide first-hand experiences to select artworks that'll enhance your knowledge beyond classroom instruction.

You can gain first-hand knowledge of some of the world's artistic masterpieces through study abroad opportunities. You could study in Paris, London, Rome and Barcelona, among other cities.

Living-Learning Communities brings together art and design majors who live on campus to enhance academic and social experiences.

What to expect

You'll need to meet the College of Visual Arts and Design's admission requirements in addition to the university's admission requirements.

Being admitted to the Art History program requires completing Art Appreciation and Art History Survey I and II courses. Once admitted, you'll take a variety of advanced-level art history courses that include one course in art history methodologies and an art history capstone course.

The Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.
