Statistics and Data Analytics are the science of collecting, analysing and interpreting data to understand uncertainty and support evidence-based decision-making. It plays a vital role in disciplines ranging from medicine and business to environmental science and social research. You will learn how to design investigations, model complex data and communicate findings effectively, developing the analytical and technical skills needed to solve real-world problems in a world increasingly shaped by data.Statistics and Data Analytics at the University of Glasgow combines strong theoretical foundations with extensive practical experience, including a dedicated year-long work placement as a practising statistician. You'll apply your skills in a workplace environment, gain valuable industry experience, develop skills in consultancy and research, and graduate with the technical expertise and professional skills in-demand by employers across a wide range of sectors.**Programme structure****Year 1**Alongside a compulsory mathematics course, you can take courses introducing topics in probability and statistical methods, with examples and case studies illustrating how statistics is used in practice in the real world.**Year 2**Alongside two compulsory mathematics courses, you will take four courses covering topics in statistical methods and probability theory, such as probability distributions, likelihood estimation and regression modelling. You will also be taught statistical programming in order to apply the theory and methods to real world data. You will also study other subjects in years 1 and 2: see Flexible degrees.**Year 3**If you proceed to Honours, you will study theory and practical training, which involves project planning, report writing and the development of presentational skills. General topics covered across courses include probability, modelling, design, inference, Bayesian methodology, machine learning and a range of applications including biostatistics, environmental statistics and financial statistics. You will also complete case studies and projects on topics which may be drawn from the fields of bioinformatics, environmental studies, medicine, psychology, sports science and veterinary science. One important feature of project activities is a presentation. You will give a talk describing your project problem, your analyses and results. This, along with writing a report in non-technical language, provides you with two important transferable skills. You will also gain experience in teamwork and learn to use statistical packages, as well as gaining appreciation of the use and misuse of computers and computer software in statistics.**Year 4**Year 4 is the MSci programme work placement year. Students who have met the criteria will undertake a paid, 12-month work placement in industry or the public sector to gain professional experience and learn to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world context.Progression to the work placement is on the basis of achieving a minimum GPA of 15 in Year 3, and successfully completing an application and interview process with a prospective employer.**Year 5**In fifth year you will have the opportunity to specialise in your area of choice and undertake a project carried out under one-to-one supervision.**Our international links**You will have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities as part of your degree. This won’t add any extra time to your studies.**Careers and future opportunities**Graduate destinationsThe following are examples of roles that graduates are in 15 months after completing their programme:* Data Scientist* Investment Analyst* Operations Analyst* Statistician* Tax Accountant* Actuarial Analyst* Assistant Planner* Banking Analytics Analyst* Data Consultant* Financial Modelling Analyst
