The Sculpture MA at the RCA provides a critical environment to explore contemporary issues through the making of sculpture. Sculpture is understood not only as object-making, but as a method for advancing artistic practice across public art, performance, installation, moving image, AI, sound and more. You are encouraged to take a critical and reflexive approach, situating your practice within contemporary social, political and economic contexts. Through experimentation, research and dialogue with peers, guest artists and practitioners, you develop an individual and interdisciplinary practice while exploring new spaces, materials, technologies and methods. From Sites and Situations to an independent research project, you build a sustained studio practice culminating in a public exhibition and further development of your work. Programme structure: Term 1 In Term 1, you take Sites and Situations, which provides practical and theoretical tools for developing your Sculpture practice through ''thinking through making''. You work across studios, project spaces, lecture theatres and workshops, supported by seminars, group critiques, personal tutorials and the A Matter of Sculpture lecture series. The unit culminates in Festus, a collaborative project involving the cohort and external partners, with a focus on collaboration, community and interdisciplinary research. Term 2 In Term 2, you take The Expanded Field, developing your studio practice and individual voice while exploring changing ecologies, technological contexts and new possibilities for sculpture. Through guest lectures, elective workshops, tutorials with international guest artists, group exhibitions and self-directed study, you consider the future direction of your practice, its relationship to research and society, and its potential for physical and digital audiences. Also in Term 2, a choice of elective units allows you to shape your learning journey and work alongside students from other programmes, bringing your practice into dialogue with diverse creative approaches, methodologies and contemporary cultural debates. Term 3 In Term 3, you take Independent Research Project, building a body of work that addresses the key ambitions of your research and practice. You develop and present your work for discussion and public exhibition, receiving peer review and critical feedback from invited arts professionals and public audiences. Following the exhibition, you further contextualise and develop your work through a digital catalogue and oral viva, alongside professional practice and alumni lectures that support your future practice and professional development.Referring to the website: Please refer to the programme webpage for the most accurate and up-to-date information about the programme, its structure, modules and any updates or changes.
