The Photography MA at the RCA brings together a cross-disciplinary community of artists and writers working at the forefront of contemporary photographic practice and image-making. Photography is understood as an expansive and evolving practice, encompassing still and moving image, publishing, performance, installation, social practice, sound, synthetic media, text and writing. The programme encourages you to explore the unknown, indeterminate, speculative and hybrid, questioning what the photographic image is and could be across contemporary art practices. You critically engage with analogue and digital forms of photography in relation to socio-political debates, intercultural discourses, theory and practice, and emerging modes of circulation and distribution. Supported by artists, writers and theorists, you develop a critical, reflective and professionally robust practice while considering the future of the image in a time of ecological crisis and technological change. Programme structure: Term 1 In term 1, you take Situating Photography: Practice and Discourse, which introduces you to the programme community through resource inductions, workshops and presentations. You position your practice and ideas through dialogue, tutorials and group work while developing your understanding of the critical, conceptual, practical and material possibilities of photographic practice. Term 2 In term 2, you take Making Public, which situates photography as an expanded and expanding field in contemporary art, with particular attention to the materiality and performativity of the image. Through workshops and specialist presentations, you explore diverse perspectives and approaches while questioning and expanding your own artistic practice and disciplinary assumptions. You also take a choice of elective units, allowing you to shape your own learning journey and work alongside students from other programmes, bringing your practice into dialogue with the creative approaches of your peers. Term 3 In term 3, you take Independent Research Project, which is structured in three parts. You develop your independent practice and work towards making your project public through an exhibition. You then participate in the public exhibition, exploring the practical and conceptual implications of staging and making work public, followed by professional practice seminars that consider reception, dissemination and professional identity. You consolidate your work through a digital platform or small print publication, supporting the further dissemination of your practice beyond the institution.Referring to the website: Please refer to the programme webpage for the most accurate and up-to-date information about the programme, its structure, modules and any updates or changes.
