Overview

Join an ever-evolving field armed with the knowledge to think critically and succeed in the criminal justice system.

Criminology focuses on the relationships between social inequalities, crime, and violence in contemporary society as well as on particular social groups in conflict with the law.

This insightful program includes courses on the theories of criminology, the institutions of the criminal justice system, explanations of crime, crime and culture, racial profiling and policing in Canada, Indigenous people and the criminal justice system, youth and society, cults and new religious movements, state-corporate crime, crime and the media.

Students are trained in social research methods, analysis, and have the opportunity to participate in research projects.

Career Opportunities

Pursue a career in policing, law, youth & juvenile justice correctional institutions, and/or indigenous affairs. Private security establishments, border, customs and immigration and security, community and safety organizations, social justice & human rights organizations, parole officer.

All secondary school applicants must successfully complete six Grade 12 4U/M courses and receive the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Minimum overall 'B' average (or GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) in a recognized academic grade 12 program. At least 4 different academic subjects at the matriculation level must be represented in the high school diploma. (A SAT I score of 1,650 or composite ACT of 24 is recommended, but not required). English Language Requirements: Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) - Test Of English as a Foreign Language: 88 overall; Computer-based TOEFL (CBT) - Test Of English as a Foreign Language: 230 overall; IELTS Academic - International English Language Testing System: 6.5 overall No band lower than 6.0; Cambridge Assessment English: C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a Cambridge Score of 176 or more; CAEL - Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: 70 overall No part below 60; Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees - CanTEST: 4.5 overall No part below 4; PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English: 60 overall.
