Teaching quality

Polito is one of the top 20 European technical universities for education and research in Engineering and Architecture. The teaching quality here is excellent, and Polito is always looking for ways to make it better.

Politecnico is a research university that focuses on research that looks at theories and real-world work. Most research is done in one of four main categories:

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Information Technologies
  • Management and Mathematics for Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, and Industrial Design

Over the years, Polito has started teaching courses in English to attract more international students to Turin. It has also set up an international department, which looks at how to make courses more useful for the global world students live and work in. Polito also has partnerships with international universities across the world and has an on-site China centre. This gives students the chance to study in another international country and feel at home in Italy.

Politecnico aims to be the top technical university at international level. It brings together high-level scientific research with high-quality education, delivered via modern and efficient technology. 25 per cent of its Ph.D students are international students, and 85 per cent get financial support.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements are different for every course. For undergraduates, they need to have finished twelve years of education. In most countries, this means that a student has finished their secondary education. Those who would like to apply for a master’s course will need to have a bachelor’s degree.

Students will also need to get a student visa before they can start their course. Those who live outside Europe can apply through the Italian embassy in their home country. Polito’s international admission page has lots of other useful information.

English Score Required

To study at Polito, students will need to prove they understand English to a certain level. They should show they have taken a test and scored:

  • IELTS – 5.5
  • Pearson Test of English Academic – 59
  • TOEFL - >72/ more than 72
  • Cambridge English Scale score >160

Admission

All students will need to apply to Politecnico di Tornino through the university’s online application system. They must register and fill out all the required information before their course’s deadline. Some courses also ask students to take a test before they can be offered a place to study at Polito.

For students who live outside the EU, they will need to complete a ‘pre-enrolment’ check using the Universitaly system. This will make sure they have the right visa to study in Italy. There is also a EUR 20 application fee for master’s courses.

Applicants will need proof of:

  • The relevant qualifications
  • A reference
  • A personal statement
  • English language proficiency

Scholarships & funding

The university offers scholarships for international students. These change every academic year, so it’s best for students to check the website to see what is available. There are a couple of specific scholarships, including Colfuturo scholarship loans. These are for Colombian students who are part of postgraduate architecture and engineering programmes.

The TOPoliTO scholarship supports the smartest students both at bachelor’s and master’s degree levels with a EUR 8000 per year scholarship. Polito wants the best international students to study there and help them learn more about science and Italian culture.

There are also scholarships for students who are refugees.

University structure

There are 11 departments at Politecnico di Torino. Each one has undergraduate, postgraduate and research students, as well as doctorate students who are on a PhD programme.

Polito has five campuses across Northeast Italy. The main one is in the city of Turin, or Torino as it is known to locals. Other campuses are located near Cuno, Allesandria, Biella and in the mountain town of Verres.

Facilities

The Politecnico campus has buildings for teaching, research, student services, technology and special education and services facilities. It is in a pretty location on the River Po and there are plenty of riverside parks to explore.

The 17th-century Castle of Valentino is the main teaching campus for architecture. The main buildings for engineering in Corso are modern, with areas for students and researchers. In recent years, the Polito has expanded even more with the Design and Sustainable Mobility Citadel. Polito also has the Fiat manufacturing facility and the Lingotto building, which is home to the master’s school.

There is a library and free access to computer labs available on campus. If they have one, students can also bring their own laptops and connect to Wi-Fi across the Polito campuses. The campuses also have canteens, which offer discounted prices to international students.

On the main campus, there is a centre for first aid. All Politecnico students are covered by health insurance, so they can access healthcare across Italy. The campus also has a bank and post office. Leisure activities, theatre and concerts are offered at lower student prices by the Politecnico as well.

Accommodation

Politecnico has agreements with housing companies to help international students find accommodation. Exchange and international students get to book their accommodation first through these companies.

Housing companies include:

  • CercoAlloggio
  • DoveVivo
  • Fondazione Ceur
  • HousingAnywhere
  • Sharing

Other halls (university accommodation) in Torino are available as well. The Edisu Piemonte support scheme helps foreign students get a room in the public, shared housing. If there are no more rooms available, students will get financial support to rent a private room.

It’s best for international students who will be in Torino for a long time should find a private apartment to rent and share with other tenants. The rent amount can vary depending on the area and the conditions of the apartment. On average, the cost is about EUR 250-350 per month per person for a single room and about EUR 200-280 per month per person for a twin room. Sometimes, all the expenses (heating, electricity, water, gas, and cleaning) are included in the rent.

Student support

Politico has lots of student services and opportunities that help students make their time here even better. There is a dedicated orientation service, a language centre where they can work on their Italian skills and libraries. The university also offers students a chance to study, intern and work all over the world.

WeAreHERe was set up by Politecnico of Torino to encourage more girls to study its courses. Its goal is to get rid of gender stereotypes and welcome more women into the university. This way, more women will enter the world of STEM – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Polito has lots of support services for students with additional needs or disabilities. The latest technology and supportive teaching is used to give students access to the information and tools they need to complete their course.

Graduate outcomes

Graduates from the Politecnico di Torino receive an education that goes beyond technical knowledge. They will learn about their chosen subject, but also understand what it means to work as a scientist, technical professional, or researcher in today’s global world.

No matter what career path they’d like to take, there are lots of opportunities for graduates. They can take on research programmes and work at the university, or work on international projects with former students from across the world. There are also continuing education courses, where graduates can learn new skills to bring to their jobs.

In the 2021 QS Graduate Employability Rankings, Polito was ranked an impressive 28. 89.5 per cent of graduates find a job a year after their course ends – much higher than Italy’s national average of 74.6 per cent. For those who choose to study for a PhD, 90 per cent will get a scholarship that makes it easier to continue their education and research.

Polito has a strong alumni network which holds an annual meeting every November. It’s a great way for students to stay in touch and keep making connections throughout their working lives. There are also awards for former students who have done brilliant things since they graduated.
