Our research-driven program spans all major chemical disciplines - analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to apply your classroom and laboratory knowledge. You'll work closely with faculty in world-class facilities. You'll assist them on research topics ranging from clean energy and renewable materials to understanding and combatting cancer and infectious diseases.

Our program develops students into professional scientists with the expertise to conduct advanced research and thrive in chemistry-related professions. You'll also be prepared to pursue your PhD in chemistry.

You can choose one of four focus areas: materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical technology, or general chemistry.

Program Highlights

As a Chemistry student in our graduate program, you’ll:

Participate in lab-intensive chemistry research with faculty members on projects supported by grants such as the development of new, effective, nontoxic, environmentally-friendly flame retardants from renewable biosources, and identifying and characterizing particular proteins that are important to Tuberculosis causing bacteria.

Have your choice of research areas to delve into — from organic chemistry to materials and nanoscience to analytics chemistry and more.

Applicants should have received a baccalaureate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related area, with a minimum grade point average of 2.7 overall and 2.7 in chemistry courses. Undergraduate coursework should include mathematics through calculus and one year of physics. Students with deficiencies in chemistry, mathematics, or physics may receive admission with stipulations. Regular admission is granted when those deficiencies are removed by completing coursework in addition to that required for the M.S. degree.

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7.

English Language Requirements:

  • (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for admission with stipulations or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission.
  • (IELTS): A score of 5.5 required for admission with stipulations or 6.5 for regular admission.
  • Pearson Test of English: A score of 44 for admission with stipulations or 53 for regular admission.
  • Michigan English Test (MET): A score of 52 is required for regular admission.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission.
  • Advanced Placement (AP): A score of 4 on the English Language or English Literature Exams.
  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or General Certificate of Education (GSE): a score of A or B on the English Language Exam.
  • SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score of 520
  • ACT English score of 21.
  • ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112 for regular admission.
  • ELI (CMU English Language Program): Successful completion of the required CMU ELI courses with confirmation by the ELI Office.
