The Department offers students a wealth of resources. Our seventeen tenured faculty members span the fields of Iberian and Latin American literature, culture, and linguistics, from the medieval period to contemporary literature and film. Students have excellent research facilities, access to UCLA’s vibrant multi-disciplinary intellectual community, plentiful talks, film screenings, and cultural events within the department and other campus units, as well as in off-campus theaters, libraries, and performance venues. Los Angeles is an important center for cultural production in the Spanish and Portuguese languages; every form of print media, film, TV, music, and theater from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula is readily available. The strength of our program draws on the culture richness of the surrounding community, which is reflected in our faculty, our undergraduate and graduate students, our service learning programs, and our many cultural events.
Our mission is to educate the next generation of teachers, scholars, and citizens in our areas of specialization within the broader context of Los Angeles, the State of California, and the nation.
