BA in Biology - Ecology and Conservation Biology Specialization

With global climate change accelerating and conservation issues arising worldwide, an understanding of ecology, ecosystems, and the measures needed to sustain Earth’s life-support systems has become increasingly important. The Biology major with a Specialization in Ecology & Conservation Biology (ECB) is designed for students seeking a greater depth of training in this critical area of contemporary biology. Advanced electives in biology may be selected from a broad range of courses including ecology, evolution, animal behavior, plant biology, and marine biology. This specialization provides students with a sound conceptual framework as well as hands-on experiences in ecology and conservation biology, preparing them for graduate study in the environmental sciences and careers in academia, government, or the private sector.Learning OutcomesDemonstrate knowledge of fundamental principles spanning the breadth of biology, with an in-depth understanding of the ecology and evolution of nonhuman animal and human behavior.Demonstrate expertise in applying the scientific method, critically evaluate and synthesize scientific literature, analyze data, and use statistical modeling and skills required for effective communication in biology.Attain the technical and/or analytical skills required for employment or postgraduate education in biology or biology-related careers, including professional careers in research and science education.
