Course Overview

Whether you’re a recent aviation graduate or have experience working in the sector, our MSc in Aviation Regulation and Law is ideal for those who are looking to advance their career prospects in this area.

With over 20 years’ experience in delivering aviation degrees, we have a strong track-record of helping students enhance their knowledge of this global industry. Our extensive industry links mean that some module content is delivered by active legal and regulatory professionals.

Why study this subject?

The global aviation industry is heavily controlled by a complex series of local, national, regional and international regulations and laws set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation – a master’s degree in this subject will equip you with a critical understanding needed to work in this area.

It is suitable for those currently employed within the industry, or aviation, business and economics graduates who wish to specialise and develop expertise in this field.

What will I study?

This one-year course consists of five modules. There are three specialist, technical modules (Airline Regulation and Law, Airport Regulation and Law, Airspace Regulation and Law) which aim to equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory and legal frameworks which underpin the industry.

These are then complemented with two academic and professional development modules (Aviation Research Project and Air Transport Management and Leadership).

How will I be taught and assessed?

Our supportive and experienced course team have extensive knowledge and capability in the areas that matter in the sector now and in the future, including globalisation, market growth and organisational resilience.

Throughout the course, students will be taught through a variety of methods, including:

  • interactive lectures
  • workshops
  • case studies
  • discussions
  • independent and group study
  • presentations
  • problem-based activities.

You’ll also take part in simulation-based activities to develop team and individual capabilities in the face of challenging scenarios, where learning by participation is linked back to theory under pressured but safe conditions.

Previous site visits have included:

  • Birmingham Airport
  • London Heathrow Airport
  • Hamburg Airport
  • Airbus
  • British Airways.

Each module takes a hybrid approach to learning with two weeks of full-time attendance at our High Wycombe campus followed by three weeks of guided independent study which can be completed at your own pace using our online learning environment.

You will be assessed through individual and group activities which take place throughout the duration of the course. Summative assessment will be based on real-world cases and projects on a consultancy basis, both involving presentations, investigations with report findings, as well as recommendations and business case proposals.

What are my career prospects?

On successful completion of this award, students from all backgrounds will find their employment prospects enhanced and their understanding of the multiple facets of aviation regulation and law significantly deepened.

Specific areas of employment for graduates include:

  • civil aviation regulators
  • global aviation policy makers
  • aviation consultancy services.

You can also progress into a wide range of managerial roles in any sector of the aviation industry including airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, tour operators and civil aviation authorities.
