We have a strong research culture with a number of our research activities rated as ‘internationally excellent’ in previous Research Assessment Exercises. The MPhil is between a taught or research masters and a PhD. You will investigate and evaluate an approved topic. You'll also prove an understanding of research methods appropriate to your chosen field. An MPhil is awarded on successful completion of a programme of supervised research. It is assessed via a thesis and a viva voce (oral examination). Throughout your MPhil journey, you will be supported by a programme of research training. This will enable you to develop transferable skills for your future career path.

We take a broad approach to legal research including doctrinal, theoretical, empirical, critical, historical and socio-legal studies of law. We offer alternative start dates for your research degree, commencing in September, January and March for maximum flexibility. September 2024 entry: Deadline for home students is 1 June 2024, EU/International is 1 May 2024, January 2025 entry: Deadline for home students is 1 November 2024, EU/International is 1 September 2024, March 2025 entry: Deadline for home students is 1 December 2024, EU/International is 1 November 2024.
