Jump into the heart of action with our Diploma in Chinese Studies (CHS), the first and only such course offered at the polytechnic level. With more than two-thirds of the course conducted in Chinese, CHS sharpens your language skills while preparing you for careers in the education, media, and tourism and business sectors.
In your first year, you will gain a solid foundation in Chinese history, culture, literature, drama and communication. You will also be exposed to the fundamentals of translation.
Careers
Being well-versed in Chinese, coupled with the overseas exposure you get, gives you the competitive advantage when you work with local firms or multi-national corporations with a presence in China. As a graduate of CHS (Chinese Early Childhood Teaching Track), you can also work as an early childhood Chinese Language teacher.
With further studies and training, you can also work as an allied educator, translator, interpreter, journalist, editor or Programmes Manager (Culture & Heritage).
Further studies
Get up to one semester's exemption when applying for relevant degree programmes at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore.
Education Track students who have completed the Diploma in Education (Chinese Language Specialisation) at NIE with good results may proceed to complete a four-year Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree course at NTU in two years.

Education Track
If you are keen on becoming a primary school teacher, choose the Education Track and get the opportunity to be trained at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in your final semester. Upon graduation, you will spend another year at NIE to complete a Diploma in Education (Chinese Specialisation). Students in this track can apply directly to the Ministry of Education for a teaching bursary that covers tuition fees and offers a monthly allowance.
