Summary of Regulations

• Students are required to complete three-years of research. Coursework is not usually a component. However, students may be asked to complete some courses, or choose to do so, especially if unfamiliar with some aspect of the proposed research topic

• Defend the PhD via an oral examination after it has been independently assessed.

To apply for a PhD, you will need an appropriate and relevant postgraduate Honours or Master’s degree awarded with at least second class honours, division one or equivalent (a grade average of a B+ or higher). IELTS academic score of 6.5 overall, with no individual component less than 6.0; TOEFL (iBT) overall score of 80 (with at least 21 in writing and 18 in Speaking); Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and First (FCE) overall score of 176, with no individual component less than 169; Pearson Test of English (Academic) overall score of 58 with no communicative score of less than 50; NZ Certificates in English Language (NZCEL) Level 5 (Academic or Professional Endorsement); Lincoln University English Language GCAE or LU EL 70%.

  • A relevant postgraduate honours degree awarded with at least second class honours, division one or its equivalent.
  • In addition, your previous qualification must include a significant research component, such as a project, dissertation or thesis.

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate that your English is good enough to study successfully at university. Lincoln University recognises achievement through a limited number of recognised tests of English Language. Below are the minimum standards for entry to the programme:

  • IELTS academic score of 6.5 overall, with no individual component less than 6.0
  • TOEFL (iBT) overall score of 80 (with at least 21 in writing and 18 in Speaking)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and First (FCE) overall score of 176, with no individual component less than 169
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) overall score of 58 with no communicative score of less than 50
  • Lincoln University English Language GCAE or LU EL 70%.
