This two-year research programme is designed to teach students high-quality research skills in Child and Education Studies. It offers a solid base for either an academic or a professional career.

Graduates are able to design, conduct and evaluate applied scientific research, and can make the link between (clinical) practice and science.

The programme Developmental Psychopathology in Education and Child Studies is designed to serve as preparatory training for a PhD position. The programme also offers the opportunity to specialise in the field of social work and youth care, which meets society's need for academics who are trained in evidence based clinical assessment and treatment for children and families with psychological problems

The research master is a small scale programme, with an average of fifteen students each year.
At the beginning of the programme, you are allocated a supervisor – one of the professors – and a day-to-day mentor. While writing your thesis, you make a contribution to one of our research programmes, working closely with your supervisor and mentor within that research.

The programme

The aim of this programme is:

  • to acquire skills in conducting scientific research with respect to major issues in educational sciences and child studies;
  • to be able to make a contribution through research to the development of theory or to the improvement of pedagogical and educational practices.

The programme prepares students for PhD programmes or positions in the public and private sector in which advanced research skills and substantial practical research experience are required.

You follow four subject specific courses:

1.Learning, Cognition and the Brain
2.Attachment and Developmental Psychopathology
3.Developmental Clinical Neuroscience
4.Recent Advances in Developmental Psychopathology

In addition, you follow five courses in research methods and statistics:

1. Conducting and Evaluating Empirical Research
2. Methods and Instruments in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience
3. Test Theory and Scale Development
4. Applied Multivariate Data Analysis 1 & 2

Internship and thesis

The second year of the research master's programme is mainly devoted to the research internship and your thesis. You conduct a research yourself as part of one of the research programmes of the Institute of Education and Child Studies. The thesis is written as an article which, in terms of its level, would be ready for submission to a refereed international scientific journal.

In your electives, you can choose your own emphasis and can, if you wish, obtain the NVO Registration Basis-Orthopedagoog.

Where do our master’s graduates continue their careers? More than a third of them obtain a PhD position, while a quarter of them work as lecturers and/or researchers in higher education. About 30% are appointed as educationalists or remedial educationalists in positions where they apply their acquired scientific knowledge and analytical skills in (clinical) practice, in the area of either prevention or intervention.
