Aims and Objectives

The Master of Public Health is a broadly based graduate training programme designed to prepare physicians, dentists, nurses, other health professionals, medical and health researchers and policy analysts to identify and analyse contemporary health and health care issues in Hong Kong, China and the Asia Pacific.

The aims and objectives of the Master of Public Health are to prepare students for public health practice and research through the acquisition of:

  • foundational knowledge within the 4 core areas of Public Health
  • an in depth understanding of local, regional and international health determinants and outcomes,
  • skills to initiate policy responses required to protect and promote population health
  • an in depth knowledge of the relevant theories and practice in public health
  • skills necessary to design and implement public health research and translate public health knowledge into practice
  • skills in the broad fields of public health to support candidates’ preparation for the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine Public Health Part I fellowship examination for physicians and the UK Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MFPH) and Diplomate (DFPH) examinations open to physicians, other health professionals and scientists, and also the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine Administrative Medicine Part I fellowship examination.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the MPH programme, students will be able to:

  • apply science towards the advancement of modern public health practice
  • translate evidence into public health knowledge and action
  • demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and research capability in public health scholarship and practice
  • advocate for the importance of public health in the community in a professional manner
  • demonstrate the skills to identify, analyse, interpret and synthesize relevant and appropriate sources of information
  • explain the ethical, legal, psychosocial and political dimensions of public health issues, decisions and actions
  • perform effectively in teams with peers and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • communicate effectively on matters affecting the health of the public
  • practise public health leadership and management skills

To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the Master of Public Health, a candidate shall:

(a) comply with the General Regulations;
(b) comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
(c) hold a Bachelor's degree with honours or the degrees of MBBS of this University, or another qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another University or comparable institution accepted for this purpose;
(d) satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b); and
(e) satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination, if required.

Advanced standing may be granted to a candidate who has successfully completed one or more courses in the Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health curricula subject to the following conditions:

(a) such course(s) should be completed no more than 5 years prior to the candidate's commencement of the Master of Public Health curriculum;
(b) such course(s) should be appropriate for the Master of Public Health concentrations the candidate has applied for; and
(c) advanced standing for up to 9 credits may be granted.

Applicants who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain:

  • a score of 550 or above in the paper-based (TOEFL) or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL or a score of 80 in the internet based TOEFL; or
  • a minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Grade C or above in the Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE); or
  • Grade C or above in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).
