Our Doctor of Education programme, offered since 1997, was the first Doctor of Education programme in Hong Kong. It graduated its first group of student in 2001. Since its establishment, the programme has attracted experienced professionals from the school and tertiary education sectors as well as government officials and practitioners in the social services.

The Doctor of Education programme is a professional doctorate that includes both coursework and research components. It offers a variety of relevant courses and supervised thesis research. The programme aims to help experienced professionals to develop a deep understanding of their chosen areas of study and to encourage them in the search for innovative approaches to educational inquiry and practical insights to help them in resolving educational problems. The Doctor of Education programme is designed to suit the needs of education professionals who seek to meet the challenges of educational change effectively but insist on becoming thoroughly grounded in the theory and practice of defined areas of study. Graduation requirements of the Doctor of Education programme better reflect its dual emphasis on coursework and research.

Student are required to choose one of the following specialisations:

Curriculum and Instruction

This specialization is designed for education practitioners and professionals who aspire to conduct research into curriculum and instruction. It aims at guiding students to understand issues surrounding the design, implementation and evaluation of curriculum and instruction from multiple perspectives, to explore the theoretical foundations of effective strategies for curriculum development, and to conduct systematic inquiry on the social and individual factors influencing curriculum and instruction in schools.

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies

Education is having profound changes and challenges at many different levels. These changes have inevitably brought a paradigm shift in educational policies and governance, as well as in educational administration, management and leadership.

- Educational Organisation and Leadership

Educational Psychology

As the highest professional degree in educational psychology, DEd in Educational Psychology provides training in some of the major knowledge domains and specializations constituting the field.

- Organisation and Implementation of School Guidance and Counselling
- The Developmental Process of Motivation and Its Role in Human Development.

Applicants must have a Master's degree holder from a recognized university; or graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" ; or completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree. English Language Requirements: TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based); IELTS (Academic): 6.5; GMAT (Verbal): Band 21.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should preferably:

  • hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or equivalent education qualifications, and/or have relevant experience as deemed acceptable;
  • provide proof of their research capability in the form of past publications, Master's thesis, and/or strong support from academic referees;
  • perform satisfactorily in an interview conducted by the Graduate Division of Education; and
  • pass a written entrance examination conducted by the Graduate Division of Education, if necessary.

To fulfill the University’s minimum English language requirements for admission to postgraduate programmes, applicants should have:

obtained a degree from a university in Hong Kong or taken a degree programme of which the medium of instruction was English; or

achieved scores in the following English Language tests2 as indicated:

TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based)/79 (Internet-based);
IELTS (Academic): 6.5;
GMAT (Verbal): Band 21; or

obtained a pass grade in other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE or

obtained a recognized professional qualification, provided that the examination was conducted in English.
