Program Overview

The Arts and Entertainment Journalism program is a cross-disciplinary offering that gives you a solid grounding for this exciting field and includes a strong focus on reporting, criticism, social media, imaging and multi-platform design.

This two-semester Arts and Entertainment Journalism program is perfect for you if you have a passion for music, theatre, film, television, dance or culture. In your courses, you learn to write snappy, relevant and market-driven stories for multiple platforms as well as the social science aspect of pop culture in a Canadian and global context. You also learn to develop a critical voice and critical thinking essential to working in the industry.

To round out training, you gain an understanding of arts promotion and publicity, and complete a six-week industry field placement. Upon completion of the program, you will have a portfolio of writing samples produced in a variety of media including album, concert and theatre reviews, columns and profiles.

Applicants must have a university degree or a three-year college diploma from a recognized institution. English Language Requirements: TOEFL (paper-based): 580+; TOEFL (computer-based): 88+ (with no test below 22); CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment): Overall band score of 70 and Writing 60; IELTS (Academic): 6.5+ (with no single test score below 6.0); Pearson Test of English (Academic): 60+; ITEP (International Test of English Proficiency): 4.1+.

  • We will consider applicants who have successfully completed partial post-secondary education (minimum two years) and have relevant work experience

Additional Requirements

Attend a mandatory program admission session where applicants will:

  • Complete an editing exercise
  • Submit a portfolio of writing samples and a resume

English Language Requirements

  • TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based) or TOEFL (computer-based) 88+ (with no test below 22)
  • IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5+ (with no single test score below 6.0)
  • CAEL with an overall band score of 70; writing score 60, or
  • MELAB score of 82, or
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 60 plus, or
  • ITEP ( International Test of English Proficiency) score of 4.1 plus
