Facilities are available for graduate work in Canadian, European, British, Middle Eastern, Japanese and Chinese history. Courses are divided into geographical and topical.

Geographical courses are designed to cover major historiographical issues over a broad chronological period, within the various geographical areas: Canadian, British, American, European and Asian.

Topical courses examine secondary literature on a significant topical theme such as social, military, intellectual/cultural, gender/women's, First Nations, religious, world or business history and cover various geographical areas and chronological periods. They relate to the particular themes that the student will pursue in his/her Ph.D. dissertation. The courses taken help to prepare students for the comprehensive written and oral examinations.

Completion of an acceptable master’s degree (or equivalent) from an institution recognized by the University of Victoria; Must meet UVic’s English Language Proficiency requirement or If you have a first-class average in the last two years of a bachelor’s degree, in addition to any requirements specific to your program of study, you may also be considered; Any requirements specific to your program of study; Must meet UVic’s. English Language Proficiency requirement: The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.

English Language requirements:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test. Individual departments may set a higher standard.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted
