The Doctor of Philosophy Integrated is for teachers and educators who wish to extend their expertise in a specialized area and gain a research doctoral qualification. The program will enhance career prospects as a specialist teacher/educator and increase opportunities for employment in leadership, research and advisory roles.

This degree includes eight specialty coursework subjects and a three-year (or part-time equivalent) supervised research project.

What you will study

The Doctor of Philosophy Integrated combines specialty subjects in an educational field with a supervised research project. Specialty fields include Adult and Vocational Education, Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Information and Communication Technology in Education and Training (ICT), Literacy, Special Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate expert, specialized cognitive technical and research skills in a discipline within social sciences to independently and systematically generate original knowledge and understanding to make a substantial contribution to the field.
  • Critically reflect on, synthesize and evaluate a substantial and complex body of knowledge at the frontier of a discipline area in social sciences.
  • Communicate research findings, explaining and critiquing theoretical propositions, methodologies, results and conclusions to peers and to the community.
  • Apply detailed knowledge of research, research integrity, ethics and the rights and safety of others, to plan and execute original research in the field of education with intellectual independence and with full autonomy, authoritative judgment, adaptability and responsibility for personal outputs.

Course Structure

The Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) requires the successful completion of 192 credit points comprising:

  • 24 credit points of research training coursework subjects;
  • 24 credit points of relevant Masters level coursework subjects approved by the Head of Postgraduate Studies (HPS);
  • A substantial research component to the value of 144 credit points; and
  • A minimum of 65% needs to be attained in the coursework subjects to be admitted into the three-year research component.

An Honours Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline at Class II Division 2 or higher or appropriate Master of Philosophy with a strong thesis performance. Special Admission Requirements: All applicants for research degrees must submit a written (preferably typed) proposal as part of their application. This proposal should: commence with a statement detailing any previous research or project experience you have undertaken, including if possible a copy of the abstract of such work; contain, in no more than one additional page, a clearly focused research proposal for the study you would wish to undertake throughout your registration in the course; and conclude with a statement of your motivation for wanting to undertake the research course. English language requirements: IELTS - 6.5 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 6.0); TOEFL – 88 (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking – 18).
