This nationally accredited course provides the opportunity for those with a passion in a particular subject specialisation and the desire to work with young people, to become secondary teachers.
Students study their preferred areas of specialisation, in addition to a suite of core education units that address key educational needs of young people. Graduates of this course will have the flexibility to take up employment in both private and government secondary schools. A central feature of this course is the range of professional practice experiences Pre-Service Teachers undertake throughout their training. This provides valuable and diverse employability skills and enables them to connect theory to practice.
English Education Major
This major prepares students for a dynamic and rewarding career teaching English and Literature in secondary schools.
The major combines study in the content of English (including literature, language, writing, and mass media) with studies in educational theory and teaching practice. It is distinctive in its approach to English teaching, emphasising the importance of sound content knowledge and innovative approaches to texts and technologies. Students receive specialized instruction from expert teachers who are also researchers and authors in the field.

- Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
- Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
- Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of visual arts and the Australian Curriculum and teaching strategies for English in secondary education.
- Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in English.
- Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement visual arts programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
- Review, analyze and synthesize knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of English teaching.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching English.
