Brings together the key aspects of national and international security with an emphasis on contemporary security issues.

By studying the core elements of terrorism, security and intelligence in the foundation year, students are able to undertake specialized study in how to counter the terrorist threat, apply intelligence gathering techniques, think critically, analyze and understand criminal motivation.

Students will learn to utilize suitable technology to secure assets, protect critical and national infrastructure and employ security management techniques to achieve desired security outcomes.

Cyber Security Major

Focuses on practical and theoretical aspects of cyber security across a range of topics, including network security and vulnerability assessment, information security policy and governance, digital forensics, wireless security, ethical hacking.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze complex cyber security scenarios and incidents to design appropriate strategies to reduce, mitigate or respond to risk.
  • Apply broad knowledge of concepts, principles and techniques in the discipline of cyber security, including network security and risk management.
  • Apply discipline knowledge, problem solving and creative thinking skills when undertaking cyber security engagements.
  • Communicate cyber security concepts and implications clearly and coherently to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the conventions and requirements for external collaboration when undertaking cyber security tasks.
  • Demonstrate autonomous and ongoing learning to ensure continued relevance of capabilities, knowledge and awareness of emerging cyber security developments.
  • Demonstrate technological literacy by finding, evaluating and using relevant tools and information from a range of sources.
  • Integrate concepts of diversity and a global outlook when undertaking cyber security engagements.

Applicants must have obtained minimum of 24 points (minimum of 28 points for Law) consisting of aggregate from 3 higher level and 3 subsidiary level. Minimum grade 3 at higher level for an English subject, or minimum grade of 4 at standard level for an English subject. English Language Requirements accepted: Academic IELTS: An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL: Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better; TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17; PTE Academic: PTE Academic 52, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement; University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced]: Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test. Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169; or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 including TWE of 5.

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English competency requirements

  • IELTS Academic - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0).
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic - 52 with no scores less than 50.
  • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17.
  • TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better.
  • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
