This degree increases your employment prospects by enabling you to gain expertise in two different areas of interest.

French is the official language of at least 29 countries, including Africa, Asia and the Pacific, with around 80 million speakers of French globally. It is also one of the most widely taught foreign languages in the world. France is one of the ten wealthiest countries in the world and a major trading partner with Australia.

Italian is the second most widely spoken language in South Australia, after English, and one of the most widely taught languages in the world. Approximately 63 million people in the world speak Italian. Italy is one of the ten wealthiest countries in the world and a major trading partner with Australia.

Japanese is spoken by around 130 million people in Japan, and is one of the most widely taught languages in South Australia. Japan is one of the world’s largest economies and one of Australia’s most important trading partners.

Studying French, Italian and/or Japanese will give you direct access to speakers of those languages, and three of the most vibrant, high tech cultures in the world. The opportunities are endless.

In this degree you will learn from world-class educators and researchers1 and benefit from our state-of-the-art learning facilities, including the Multimedia Languages Lab where you can connect in real-time with native speakers from around the world. You will also connect with the Research Centre for Languages and Cultures (RCLC).There is also the opportunity for you to gain global experience as part of the Hawke Ambassador International Volunteer Experience (full semester) or Professional Experience Program (part semester).

What you'll learn

Under the guidance of world-class researchers you will embark on an in-depth study of French, Italian, Japanese or English (for non-English speaking students). You will develop your proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in your chosen language, as well as your understanding of the related culture and society.

You will also be given the opportunity to immerse yourself in your chosen language and culture through exchange and in-country study programs. This degree allows you to select two majors ensuring you graduate with a broad knowledge of two areas of interest. You can choose your second major from the following:

Creative Writing and Literature
English Language (for speakers of English as a second language)
History and Global Politics
Languages (French/Italian/Japanese)

Employers in a range of professions and industry sectors are rewarding graduates with knowledge of other languages and understanding of intercultural relationships with job opportunities in Australia and overseas. Education providers, professional services firms and not-for-profit organisations are among those with headquarters, alliances and networks in international markets.

If you are interested in pursuing teaching roles you may choose to continue your studies with a Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Applicants are required to meet one of the following criteria with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements and essential requirements for admission:

Recent secondary education:

Meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C- or equivalent and

Complete secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE, or

Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points

or

Higher education study

Complete or partly complete a recognized higher education program at a recognized higher education institution

or

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Complete an award from a registered training organization at Certificate IV or above

or

Work and life experience

Hold completed secondary qualifications equivalent to SACE obtained more than 2 years in the past

English language requirements:

IELTS score of 6.0; TOEFL iBT score of 60 with Reading and Writing not less than 18; TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) score of 550 with TWE of 4.5; Cambridge CAE/CPE score of 169; Pearson's test of English (Academic) (PTE) score of 50 with Reading and Writing communicative scores not less than 50; CELUSA score of AE4.
